    I hate this. I hope eventually they'll add a simple button that would prevent us from generating this checker map every time and spend time to connect them in materials. In Max and Maya, and probably in Cinema it's 1 click to turn it on and 1 click to remove it.

    Ciao, una domanda. Questo software richiede per forza l'esportazione in un altro software 3d per il rendering o l'animazione tipo "volo di done"? Mi sto avvicinando adesso a questo programma, non lo conosco per nulla.

    • @AndreaCantelli
      @AndreaCantelli Місяць тому

      Ciao, questo è un software per creare terreni con relative textures e anche maschere per indicare dove dovrebbe essere la vegetazione, rocce o per texturing più preciso in altri software ( es. In questo punto c'è la sabbia, in questo il fango etc ). Per il rendering puoi catturare uno screenshot direttamente dal programma perché la viewport utilizza Unity quindi è tutto renderizzato in tempo reale ( la thumbnail di UA-cam è uno screen del programma ) o puoi realizzare un turn around del terreno ( terreno gira e camera fissa ). Non puoi animare la telecamera quindi niente drone/volo d'uccello. Adesso è uscita la nuova versione in accesso anticipato ovvero Gaea 2 che presenta molti miglioramenti ma non mi pare supporti le animazioni. Altri software simili sono World Machine ( il più vecchio ) e World Creator.

    Hello... I've been following your tutorial and I am, so far, not getting the kinds of results I was hoping for when I downloaded this software. I'm using the free version for now, and employing the 4K preview resolution. I want to get within the equivalent of 500 feet (roughly 170 meters) from the surface and do a flyover. At that height, things are still looking too smooth and low-res. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

    • @AndreaCantelli
      @AndreaCantelli 2 місяці тому

      Hello, It's normal. At such low height it's impossible to retain a good amount of details due to the size of the land. You have to add vegetation, rocks and scanned/custom textures to make the terrain look good because that's why landscapes close ups look good: they are covered with natural elements. If you want to use the Gaea terrain and textures only you have to setup an airplane shot usually at 8km to 12km height and then zoom in emulating a telescopic lens. Obviously it depends on the height of your terrain.

      @@AndreaCantelli Hello, one more question? What is the best workflow if I wanted to keep it to 500' to 1,000' (~170m to 330m) altitude? Would it be best to just bring the Gaea geo into Maya and make an Arnold or Redshift tiled shader with layers for break-up? Or, is there a better workflow? I know UE5 also has a layered materials feature (something I'll look up tutorials for). I wanted to keep it within UE5 since rendering times would be quickest (and it has some very nice atmospheric controls), but if I'll have more control of the look within Maya, maybe that would ultimately be better? Is there, in fact, a real advantage to using Gaea over, say, Maya for real-world terrains? I can see the interest in Gaea for realistic, fictional height maps, but beyond that?

    • @AndreaCantelli
      @AndreaCantelli Місяць тому

      Hi, I always use Gaea for creating terrains because it has many advantages compared to GIS maps or simple noise features inside Maya or another software: 1) You can customize the look of your terrain 2) You can create masks and export them for quick texturing and scattering 3) You can create highly detailed terrains in less time compared to combining noises in Maya, Houdini etc. You can also import external heightmaps in Gaea ( GIS etc. ) for further customization. Regarding your question related to UE5 vs other: This is the classic "real time vs offline rendering" debate. If you're working on a personal project you can choose the one you're more comfortable with. In the case of UE5 you'll need to create a landscape material ( check out the documentation or tutorials ) with textures from Megascans ( which is free for UE5 ) or other sources. While in the case of Arnold, Redshift etc. you can create procedural shaders or use custom textures. In both cases i advise you to leverage the power of masks generated by Gaea to quickly textures your terrain and scatter plants/rocks. Advantages of UE5 for landscapes: - Real time feedback/rendering - Megascans is free which is a big plus - Built in atmo and water system Advantages of an offline renderer for landscapes: - Can achieve photorealism ( UE5 will always looks like a game or very good CG ) - More detailed terrains by using more polygons - No optimization needed as long as it renders - You can scatter hundreds of millions of plants - You can use higher resolution textures because you aren't rendering in real time

      @@AndreaCantelli Thank you for such a thorough response! Here's what I'm trying to do: I'm working to build a flyover of ancient Israel, from Nazareth to the west shore of the Sea of Galilee. I'm trying to dig up (no pun intended) archaeological data on the area for as much accuracy as possible. So the scene, you see, is not a fictional environment. Gaea's great for creating fictional regions, but it seems there's no real advantage for using it for real places. The challenge is obviously the shear size of the environment. I was put off to using Maya for the process since I figured that it could not handle the depth of such a scene (the textures, millions of trees and other foliage, and the shear modeling detail of the terrain). I heard that Gaea and UE are better for this sort of thing because they're designed for real-time productions (Nanite tech, Gaea's ability to add details to a low-res height map, etc.). I've been studying UE, and figured I'd now add Gaea to the list. Now, after hearing that adding such details is the same basic process regardless of the software I use, makes me think that I may be better off using Maya.. maybe I could bring the scene into UE, bring in Nanite trees and rocks... I don't know now. Look... you've been great, very informative. I've never tackled this sort of thing before. I've built environments and environmental elements, but nothing on this level. Thanks for all the guidance! I'm subscribing to your channel.

      Height maps and displacement maps are the same. Height maps is how they call them in games while displacement is a terminology used in VFX. Simply right click one of the nodes that form the shape of the terrain ( usually the last one like erosion or whatever you have as the last node in the chain ) and mark it for export. All the details/shapes up to that node will be exported.

    Would be nice if GAEA can generate tangent space normal too not just object space. Otherwise we need bake the high to the low in other program. I tried XNormal to convert it but nope. The result was bad. (Not green channel problem.) The normal calculated on the high geo. So we need convert it on that geo but that normal not working correctly on lower topology as intendent because the low and the high geo's vertex normal not compatible each other (different positions and normal angle).

      I tried to export normal map from gaea to blender and it didn't work at all (tried object space to tangent space)

    Ciao Andrea, what about construction lines as dotted lines just like in SolidWorks?

      Ciao, they are already dotted. I checked in the options menu and you can't change them.

      It's UA-cam fault. They are enabled by default but for some reason they don't work for certain older videos.

    Thank you for this. Just wondering, does anyone know what replaced the "rock" node in the new Gaea version?

      There are many ways to create rocks and outcrops in the newer versions of Gaea: LookDev Surface node set to rocky: Creates small rocks based on the shape of your terrain. They are already blended in with your terrain. I don't recommend using it for close up shots LookDev Outcrops node: It's used to create stone or minerals outcrops which are already blended in with your terrain GeoPrimitive Rocky: Create a shattered rocky floor which can be blended with your main terrain using the "insert" or "embed" mode of the combine node GeoPrimitive RockNoise: It's used to create multiple rocks to be applied to your desired terrain using the "insert" or "embed" mode of the combine node To answer your question, the most straightforward way to replicate what i did in this old tutorial is to use the LookDev Surface node set to rocky and mask it.
